Military & Veterans
A profession-specific application of The MAYDAY Model™ for service members, veterans, leaders, families, and military-connected communities.
Recognize the Weight Before It Becomes the Crisis.
In Military & Veterans, distress can be hidden behind competence, humor, duty, routine, and the expectation to keep functioning. This pathway applies MAYDAY to stressors such as operational stress, deployment cycles, separation, reintegration, transition, moral injury, family impact, loss, and unit culture.
The goal is not to label or diagnose a coworker. The goal is to notice meaningful change, ask directly, respond proportionately, activate appropriate support, and stay connected.

What This Looks Like in Military & Veterans
Watch for Change
Look for clustering, persistence, escalation, impact, and changes from the person's usual baseline—not a single isolated moment.
Use Direct, Human Language
Say what you have noticed, explain why you are asking, listen without immediately fixing, and ask clear safety questions when concern is elevated.
Activate the Right Network
Possible pathways may include battle buddies and peers, command pathways, chaplaincy, military/veteran behavioral-health services, family supports, and local emergency resources.
Stay Connected
Referral is not the end of the response. Follow up responsibly while respecting privacy, role boundaries, and required reporting or emergency procedures.
