PUBLIC SAFETY PATHWAY

Healthcare

A profession-specific application of The MAYDAY Model™ for nurses, emergency department staff, clinicians, technicians, support staff, and healthcare leaders.

WHY THIS PATHWAY MATTERS

Recognize the Weight Before It Becomes the Crisis.

In Healthcare, distress can be hidden behind competence, humor, duty, routine, and the expectation to keep functioning. This pathway applies MAYDAY to stressors such as patient loss, moral injury, workplace violence, staffing pressure, fatigue, compassion burden, and caregiving stress.

The goal is not to label or diagnose a coworker. The goal is to notice meaningful change, ask directly, respond proportionately, activate appropriate support, and stay connected.

CORE MAYDAY RESPONSE

Recognize

Mood Changes • Altered or Avoidant Coping • You Isolate • Despair Talk • Anxiety Spikes • You Feel Useless

Respond

Monitor • Acknowledge • Yield • Direct • Activate • You Stay Connected

What This Looks Like in Healthcare

Watch for Change

Look for clustering, persistence, escalation, impact, and changes from the person's usual baseline—not a single isolated moment.

Use Direct, Human Language

Say what you have noticed, explain why you are asking, listen without immediately fixing, and ask clear safety questions when concern is elevated.

Activate the Right Network

Possible pathways may include coworkers, supervisors, wellness programs, EAP, peer support, clinical behavioral-health resources, and hospital emergency procedures.

Stay Connected

Referral is not the end of the response. Follow up responsibly while respecting privacy, role boundaries, and required reporting or emergency procedures.

Safety boundary: The MAYDAY Model™ is educational. It does not replace licensed assessment, treatment, crisis intervention, emergency response, or organizational protocols. Immediate danger requires prompt escalation to the appropriate local emergency or crisis service.

Stronger Minds. Safer Teams. Connected People.
